SOME 556 residents were among the first batch to receive the RM500Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) vouchers at the Serom state constituency.

BR1M was initiated byPrime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last year to be given to households thatearn less than RM3,000 a month.

Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othmansaid the initiative was spurred by the Federal government after considering thecurrent state of the community.

Ghani said  this target group  was  facing the affects of rising costs  following a global trend of inflation in countries in Europeand  the United States.

"The prime minister sees this and stresses that low-income earnersneed to be assisted in terms of cash," said Ghani during a speech at aceremony to hand out the BR1M vouchers.

Also present were Ledang member of Parliament, Hamim Samuri and Tangkakstate assemblyman, Goh Tee Tee.

Ghani said BR1M differs from previous forms of contribution, as thegovernment now  gives out cash instead of providing subsidies.

He said low-income earners could now feel a direct affect with thecontribution of cash aid.

"The government is aware and knows what is needed by the communityto ensure  their standard of living is raised.

"The prime minister wants to turn Malaysia into a high-incomenation by 2020.

"The needy would be assisted in terms of finances and the imparting ofskills in order to achieve this target."

Meanwhile, Hamim said 2,087 residents in the Ledang parliamentaryconstituency are entitled to the BR1M aid, and efforts were being made with theLedang District Council for them to receive it.

Serom is one of three state constituencies in the Ledang parliamentaryseat.
