An overreaction to the talent deficit Posted: 17 Apr 2011 05:00 PM PDT (This post appears as a column in the latest edition of The Edge) The government's recent announcement to offer a 15% flat income tax rate for five years under the Returning Experts Programme (REP) has naturally been met with some cynicism and disappointment at home. Much of the criticism rests with the thought that those who came back to Malaysia and spent many years building their careers at home have been discriminated against and those who left and stayed in greener pastures while not contributing much to the country's development are being offered a juicy tax rate in the name of reducing the brain drain. It's a simple argument but one that is potent and difficult to dismiss. |
